Ian Stocker
Ian Stocker is the absolute master of hand held audio! We here at GL33k have worked with Ian for around five years now and have been consistantly impressed with his attention to detail and his mastery of getting tiny files to sound great on both speakers and headphones. When we have a DS project that requires top notch music we turn to the master.

Mushroom Men Update 1
null

We can't talk too much about Mushroom Men, however I can say that I'm very VERY excited. In fact I've never had quite as much fun working on a game.

One of the features we created back when we started talking to Red Fly about the project was a metronome feature that would drive all the audio for the game. Essentially what this means is that world sounds and events can occur on the beat of the music creating a sort of found sound rhythm meets Les Claypool bass kind of experience. A lot of it is incedental but its provided a really unique approach to creating world sounds that sync seamlessly with the music.

We've been using Ableton Live a lot to create a lot of the environmental sounds that you'll hear throughout the game and the results are quite cool. When I started doing game audio I would often get side tracked by attempting to make beats out of environmental effects. Whats great is that now not only do I get to create rhythmic world sounds but I also get to create them to whats starting to become a very amazing and stylistic world unlike any other of I've seen.

AMP gets all Experimental on that "A"
John Cages Favorite Energy Drink

so we were recently hired by Tribal DDB to do some experimental music for Mountain Dews AMP energy drink. How experimental you ask?? Well its pretty freaking out there thats for sure. It really surprised me that they wanted to go in this direction but they did. Joshua Davis was the flash man behind this and Chris Sabat (from Okratron 5000) and the GL33k crew composed four loop sets based on the idea of each of the AMP energy themes.

Why don't you AMP yourself and see what happens.)

Devastor (My New Favorite PlugIn)
Devastor My Heart

Devastor is a multiband distortion plug in that I've recently fell in love with.
I've been using it a lot on the Guitar Hero cinematic sequences because it adds a nice warm overdrive sound to rumbles and bass fly bys that although are loud are sitting at such a low frequency that they never pop through the mix. The multiband distortion can add either extreme or subtle grit to a variety of things. If that impact your working on is lacking some punch this plug might be the way to go.

I used to use Guitar Rig for this and although I love guitar rig it tended to be too overdriven and would muddy up the source material I was working with (not to mention the fact that its a HUGE MEMORY HOG!!!!). Devastor is a great in between. I can still identify the source but an added warmth and grit becomes quickly present making my impacts and bass fly bys come to life.

The only downside to it is that its AU and VST only, so love for Pro Tools users is limited to using a VST to RTAS wrapper which is available through FXPansion.

highly recommended.

Warrior Epic in Closed Beta
Sweet Hot Gun Girl Action

Hey Gang!

so we've been heavily involved in Warrior Epic for about the last eight or nine months and its been quite a ride. The crew at Possibility Space created some very easy to use tools so we can create sounds and get them in to the game in the US while the majority of the development takes place in China.

Its been a huge learning experience and great fun to work on. We're nowhere near done (in fact I don't think we'll ever be done). Regardless Warrior Epic is now in Closed Beta and its received excellent feedback so far. I can't wait until this is released to the public and we can make sound changes in realtime, that'd be swell. Until then check out this preview article.
