Mushroom Men is Out and Reviewed
Mushroom Men!
Mushroom Men is a big deal to us GL33k boys. It marked our move to Austin, TX into a new studio. It was our first time to do everything from audio direction and sound design to integration, some scripting and composing music. It was huge to have the opportunity to integrate some custom music from Les Claypool. We were able to utilize various elements from his recordings to remix into more music tracks with a variety of moods for different uses. Along with the four main themes he contributed, GL33k contributed something like 50 different pieces of music. Mike Behrman, an ace with music trackers and RedFly's audio scripter for Mushroom Men contributed the sweet 16-bit style themes you hear during "Turret Time!" game modes.

Our work on Mushroom Men is being well received by the press albeit with some misinformation regarding the level of involvement Les Claypool had. Hey, no hard feelings, it's cool! We worked hard to maintain a style that's an organic mix of what Claypool brought to the table and where we were going with it from the beginning. Anyway, here's what they are saying:

"Mushroom Men's sound design is exceptional. Les Claypool (of Primus fame) contributes his own brand of quirky, funky bass lines that suit this world perfectly. Props also go to audio company Gl33k which brings the game's environments to life through clever use of sound effects." --IGN.com

"Perhaps even more central to the experience is the fantastic soundtrack -- an ominous, moody melange of bass, violins, and xylophones (for starters) by Primus' Les Claypool and game audio company GL33k." --1UP.com

"The game's personality is further enhanced thanks to the game's bizarre, yet fantastic score" --Gamespy

"...one of the year’s best soundtracks: a quirky, off-kilter creation composed in part by Les Claypool of the band Primus. It’s totally uniqe and fits the kitschy-but-cool, retro-spooky vibe of the game perfectly." --GamesRadar.com

"...the comical language of the mushrooms never seems to get tiresome... The unique sounds and rhythms do an excellent job of capturing the eerie and alien feel of the game" --CheatCC.com

"...one of the best soundtracks of the year... In fact, I think it’s fair to say that the music and atmosphere are the best parts of the game... the semi-experimental sounds and deeply funky melodies underscore every moment of the Mushroom Men experience. It’s very organic..." --GameShark.com
